The Trees ( Poem - for @maryaimee)

The Trees (1974)

By Philip Larkin

The trees are coming into leaf
Like something almost being said;
The recent buds relax and spread,
Their greenness is a kind of grief.

Is it that they are born again
And we grow old? No, they die too.
Their yearly trick of looking new
Is written down in rings of grain.

Yet still the unresting castles thresh
In fullgrown thickness every May.
Last year is dead, they seem to say,
Begin afresh, afresh, afresh.

SeaStories1983 : A beautiful place to live and observe the seasons. This poem was featured recently in the movie Empire of Light. It's a good movie though the sexual attraction between the male and female leads (Michael Ward and Olivia Colman) is a little hard to believe. She's a 48 year old who previously played Queen Elizabeth in the Crown, and he is 25. I read an interview with them about their sex scenes. She said in between takes he got a WhatsApp message, then while she was straddling him in the panoramic window of the disused theatre restaurant, he whispered to her that it was his mum's birthday that day, and she was 43, so younger than Colman.

We are still getting snow from time to time along the Colorado Front Range. . . but the buds are emerging on many species of trees. Soon we will see blossoms and catkins and what little green we get in this arid region will be a glorious explosion among the elms, oaks, aspens, and cottonwoods. . .
