The Flautist. Part One

"Play it again, Sam."

Catherine raised her surprised eyes and met with the sparkly eyes of her friend. Kate (she hated "Cath" to the bone) forgot for the moment that the secret name her friend addressed her was cleverly covered in the misquote from "Casablanca". Sitting at the centre of the stage, bathed in light, she felt exposed and insecure.

"Oh, I don't think..."

"If they could stand it" Michelle nodded to the audience, "I can too. Play it."

"Yes, Nick", Kate addressed Michelle with her secret name.

"It's Rick" corrected some nerd from the audience and everybody laughed. Kate turned a few pages back and landed on the fuge from Handel's Sonata for flute traversiere in E minor. The very one they had so miserably failed on during that very recital. Michelle raised her instrument, took a deep breath and began the theme.

"Not too fast, not too fast" prayed Kate. She closed her eyes. Their usual tempo was as fast as hell, but with no rush felt—just the vivid music of the baroque genius. But this encore was even quicker. Kate smiled and entered with the answer. They nailed every single note. It was pure perfection, as it should be the first time... The girls were finally able to pay homage and respect to the composer. Alas, it was too late. Despite the stormy ovation from the audience, the players were devastated by their failure mid-way through the programme.

And they had planned such a nice evening after. They planned to go to the hotel, rest and have a nice time together. Bowing and smiling, the girls knew the mood for the evening was spoiled with that one failed entry of the theme...

***
Her black hair was gorgeous, especially considering her big blue eyes and pale skin. Her cheeks would turn a lovely shade of red when she laughed, ran or was tired or excited. She was fit, having been a member of a sports team at school, but she was often teased about her large breasts, wide hips and round tummy. But if you looked closely, you could see her narrow waist and stunning long legs. She was very aware of her body and used to dress to accentuate every curve, every asset. Even in summer, she opted for a shallow neckline.

Kate met her at her house in the suburbs. She spent all her life near the city centre, and she did not like the suburbs and was terrified of the prospect of returning home late at night. She only accepted the invitation to the New Year's Eve party because she had nowhere to go, and that particular year she was not feeling like watching movies alone.

She entered the room where the host was preparing the dinner table. The dark-haired girl felt the movement behind her back and turned around.

"Oh, hi there! I'm Michelle," she introduced herself. "And if you start humming this song, I may use this very fork! You have been warned."

"I am Catherine, and if you address me 'Cath' I may use the fork! Please call me Kate."

They looked into each other's eyes and smiled.

"Thank you so much for the invitation," Kate said, offering her hand to Michelle, who gladly accepted. As she took the long-fingered palm of the blonde in hers, she couldn't help but narrow her eyes. Then she looked at the other palm of Kate and smiled with confidence.

The evening was going well, Kate knew some people, so did not feel alone in the crowd, and Michelle was a perfect host. One room was for dancing, the other one for chatting. It was about eleven o'clock when Michelle found Kate sitting on the couch.

"You OK? You do not dance?"

"Oh, no . . .  and I am fine with that. I do not dance well, and do not like it, because . . ."

"Because you're a musician" Michelle finished the phrase. "I saw you were a guitarist when we shook hands."

"Yep, bloody nails. You cannot pass a spy, can you, with those ugly nails on one hand and none whatsoever on the other."

"Come on, they serve you well. And you have beautiful fingers" Michelle took Kate's hand and touched it gently, smiling. "I wish I had those! Mine are short and helpless, they look childish."

Kate looked at the hands of the other girl in surprise. They were cute, round, small, with nails cut short. She fought the urge to kiss the tips of the black-haired beauty.

"Fortunately, they would do for the instrument I play."

Kate imagined those little fingers on various instruments, but somehow her mind veered to other pictures. She saw those hands on her body, playing with her ni . . . She coughed.

"Which is?" said Kate.

"Transverse flute. What? Oh, please, no . . . " Michelle's reaction to the new dance piece they could hear from the other room. "Waltz! I hate waltzes!"

Kate's heart broke and she fell in love. That girl was a dream. With her wit, profession, and musical taste she seemed to be a perfect fit for Kate's current life.

"If you cannot fight it, love it! Fancy a dance? With me?"

Kate took a little while to decide, but then she took Michelle's hand and followed the girl into the dancing room.

"I do not remember the steps," she whispered.

"Neither do I. Let's just have a bit of fun with it, shall we?"

Bar after bar, phrase after phrase, the girls felt more and more confident – they were doing great. They only tripped over each other's feet a couple of times, and had such a wonderful time that they almost wished the waltz would never end! Kate gave Michelle a little kiss on the cheek.

"I'm sorry," she said with a warm smile. "I just felt that... I just wanted to say thank you for the dance."

"Come with me."

Michelle led Kate to the staircase and they climbed up to the first floor. The black-haired girl led Kate into one of the bedrooms and closed the door behind them. There were guests' coats on the bed, so Michelle pushed Kate to the chair and sat on her lap. Then she began to kiss the blonde with passion.

"Oh, you've left your guests?" Kate replied, her voice soft and hesitant.

"Oh, don't worry about them! I've got the New Year hot dish in the oven and I just need to check in twenty minutes or so. I told Paul to open the champagne, and the rest, as you could see, is running by itself. Now, no more talking."

Michelle kissed Kate, again and again, relishing every moment, every inch: lips, cheeks, ears, and neck. Then she took a quick peek at her wristwatch. Kate laughed, they both did. The girls were kissing as if they had known each other for ages. Michelle took Kate's hand and placed it on her breast, and Kate let out a deep, contented sigh in response.

"Come on, play with them, sweetheart."

Kate was far too happy to believe it was true. She gently caressed her friend's breasts, careful not to scare away this wonderful dream. Michelle took Kate's face gently in her hands and then, ever so slowly, moved them down to squeeze the small, firm breasts of the blonde. It really got her going. She felt a lovely warmth on her body, and, with the corner of her eye, she spotted the face of her watch.

"I have to go." Michelle stood up and looked at herself in the mirror. With just a few little touches, she made herself look perfect and went to the door.

"Just take your time, sweetheart. When you leave the room, turn right and you'll find the stairs at the end of the corridor."

Kate was out of breath. Oh, did it happen? Absolutely! What a perfect way to end the year! It took her a while to get ready. Her hair was a bit of a mess, so she tied it up, left the room and went downstairs to meet the New Year.

This starts with an oft misquoted line from Casablanca to Handel’s Sonata (for transverse flute!) a fugue which makes this cat purr, I knew we were in for a treat! Then a flashback to how the two lovers met. Nice description of Michelle, if I were Cath, opps! Kate, I would fall in love with her too.

A delightful introduction, filled with a light wit and anticipation of tactile pleasures to reward those who listen with open eyes.
