Kahlil gibran (much love Devo23)

On Beauty
Kahlil Gibran
Where shall you seek beauty, and how shall you find her unless she herself be your way and your guide?
And how shall you speak of her except she be the weaver of your speech?

The aggrieved and the injured say, "Beauty is kind and gentle.
Like a young mother half-shy of her own glory she walks among us."
And the passionate say, "Nay, beauty is a thing of might and dread.
Like the tempest she shakes the earth beneath us and the sky above us."

The tired and the weary say, "Beauty is of soft whisperings. She speaks in our spirit.
Her voice yields to our silences like a faint light that quivers in fear of the shadow."
But the restless say, "We have heard her shouting among the mountains,
And with her cries came the sound of hoofs, and the beating of wings and the roaring of lions."

At night the watchmen of the city say, "Beauty shall rise with the dawn from the east."
And at noontide the toilers and the wayfarers say,
"We have seen her leaning over the earth from the windows of the sunset."

In winter say the snow-bound, "She shall come with the spring leaping upon the hills."
And in the summer heat the reapers say,
"We have seen her dancing with the autumn leaves,
and we saw a drift of snow in her hair."
All these things have you said of beauty,
Yet in truth you spoke not of her but of needs unsatisfied,
And beauty is not a need but an ecstasy.
It is not a mouth thirsting nor an empty hand stretched forth,
But rather a heart enflamed and a soul enchanted.

It is not the image you would see nor the song you would hear,
But rather an image you see though you close your eyes and a song you hear though you shut your ears.
It is not the sap within the furrowed bark, nor a wing attached to a claw,
But rather a garden for ever in bloom and a flock of angels for ever in flight.

People of Orphalese, beauty is life when life unveils her holy face.
But you are life and you are the veil.
Beauty is eternity gazing at itself in a mirror.
But you are eternity and you are the mirror.

On Children Your children are not your children. They are the sons and daughters of Life's longing for itself. They come through you but not from you, And though they are with you yet they belong not to you. You may give them your love but not your thoughts, For they have their own thoughts. You may house their bodies but not their souls, For their souls dwell in the house of tomorrow, which you cannot visit, not even in your dreams. You may strive to be like them, but seek not to make them like you. For life goes not backward nor tarries with yesterday. You are the bows from which your children as living arrows are sent forth. The archer sees the mark upon the path of the infinite, and He bends you with His might that His arrows may go swift and far. Let your bending in the archer's hand be for gladness; For even as He loves the arrow that flies, so He loves also the bow that is stable.

halinaplays : Thank you. No I did not recognize the name. I have never read a great deal of anything other than fantasy, science fiction and horror. I have tried to read some of the classic pieces of literature but normally find them dry and unpalatable to my taste. I am very much a product of our times. I do not like older movies for the most part because the acting styles often seem too hectic, near chaotic to me. I don't mind that in a storyline but if I don't enjoy the acting the film is wasted on me. Oops I've went off on a tangent again but will leave what I have written as a further glimpse into my persona Yours, Tom

halinaplays : If I remember correctly Gibran was the one to say "If you love something set it free. If it returns, it is yours forever. If it does not, it never was". That one was always very important to me because I have such trouble letting things go or holding on to things that are damaging or detrimental to me. In my youth I had a tendency to stay in destructive relationships due to fear of never finding another partner. It is amazing how powerful a few lines on a page, scribbled decades, centuries, or even a few millennia ago can still resonate with us today.

bagheera333420 : My dearest baggy, I am glad you know of gibran and you shared such a quote. My friend Markus sent me the passage I posted. I'm sentimental and it brought back memories of a better time in my life when I was young and few things mattered to me more than my copy of 'the prophet.' Time can ruin some things. I can't find the book that was so special to me because it was a gift from someone I loved. So reading a passage like this and your quote, remind me I once thought the whole world revolved around spirituality and enlightenment.

epic3min4 : My dearest one, this is all kahlil gibran. He is one of my greatest sources of inspiration. You write poetry so you understand. My words can be beautiful. I don't think another mortal will have such a way with words as gibran. I don't know how well you know counter-culture. Gibran's book 'the prophet' is one of the bestselling books of all time. If you're in a bad place, buy a copy. I really mean it. Even elvis bought it in mass quantities and gave it to people. It's the most beautiful thing I've ever read.

cavalier098 : Awe it's all kahlil gibran, babe. And this post is something my friend Markus (Devo23) sent me. The best gifts in life are free. Gibran is without comparison. If you want wisdom and beauty within words, read the prophet. It has changed many lives. Also, if you need to impress a special lady, I won't tell if you copy this passage and send it to her. Any woman would blush to receive something this special.

OrlandoFlMan : awe thank kahlil gibran, not me. And think my friend Markus, (Devo23) for sending it to me. Nothing makes a better gift for a woman like me than a passage like this from a poet with no comparison. The best things in life are free.

no cumslut, this is a man named kahlil gibran. I could never write like this. Maybe no one could write like him. He is someone beyond the normal term poet. He's more than that. He's the third most popular/bestselling poet of all time behind shakespeare and laozi. Basically, he's kind of a big deal, my love.

A friend who is far away is sometimes much nearer than one who is at hand. Is not the mountain far more awe-inspiring and more clearly visible to one passing through the valley than to those who inhabit the mountain? -Khalil Gibran
