Despite advances in general acceptance and equality laws, homophobic bullying in the playground is still a thing. And same sex attraction in the young is not exactly celebrated. As gay men, we all have to wrestle with ourselves and reconcile a rites of passage. For some it can be relatively quick and easy, and well supported. Others can reach the end of their lives and still never reconcile their sexuality (to themselves or the rest of the world). A lot of it has to do with the communities we are brought up in, and the attitudes and values of our parents. And not forgetting, there are still places on the planet where same sex attraction can lead to imprisonment or worse. What stands out for me in your story is the friend who had enough awareness to notice where your eyes were fixed and offer a word of support and caution. To be that cognizant and supportive at aged ten really is remarkable. What a great fellow to have around.
